EPE Report Initiates Many Discussions (Birmingham, 30.08.2011)
During the 14th European conference on power electronics - EPE 2011 - head of R&D center of Proton-Electrotex JSC Alexey Surma presented his report - One more way to increase the recovery softness of fast high-voltage diodes.
Report topic is quite relevant, since demand in high voltage fast recovery diodes is growing based on development of machinery working on IGBT and IGCT.
There are some special requirements:
- stable functioning at high values of di/dt direct current roll-off at reverse recovery (from hundreds to thousands of A/µs), and the current roll-off speed is controlled by inductivity of circuit
- soft recovery
The softer characteristic of reverse recovery of FRD, the lower voltage spike at recovery of this device in the circuit with mainly inductive load, and the lower level of electromagnetic noise caused by fast changes (oscillations) of current and voltage during the switching of the module.
The specialist from R&D center designed and produced experimental diodes according to described in report method of proton irradiation. Based on the received data the possibility of production of high voltage diode with extremely soft recovery: for diode with 56mm silicon element and reverse voltage of 4800 V with inductive load, di/dt over 1500 A/µs, s-factor 1,5-1,8.
The report aroused high interest from representatives of many companies. Thus, for example, animated discussion with Dr. Josef Lutz, the author of soft diodes series produced by Semikron, took place.
Proton-Electrotex was invited to the next conference, which will take place in France in year 2013. Since a lot of new developments are planned for future year by our R&D center, we can have interesting experimental data, which will be good basis for report in EPE 2013.
Reference: EPE conference (European Power Electronics) - is an international event in power electronics industry, where specialist form leading manufacturing companies discuss the reports on modern technologies, latest tendencies in production of power semiconductor devices and share operational experience. Conference is intended for researchers, developers and specialists and always holds in the biggest university towns.
